The Rock vs. Roman Reigns was initially planned for WrestleMania 39, but due to The Great One’s hectic schedule, he couldn’t be physically prepared for the bout. The match is now more or less confirmed for this year’s WrestleMania, indicating that The Rock aimed to elevate WrestleMania 40 with this showdown.
To build up hype for the already highly anticipated match, The Rock disclosed that discussions about a showdown with The Head of The Table are already in progress. Naturally, this revelation sparked a ton of excitement among fans.
However, many fans wanted him to face Roman Reigns after WrestleMania instead. That might have just changed as The Rock confronted Roman Reigns on SmackDown this week after Cody Rhodes confirmed he won’t face Reigns at WrestleMania 40.
According to PWInsider, WWE had been strategically setting up a rematch between Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns. However, it was suggested that The Rock intervened, with one source stating it was to “save Wrestlemania.” This move came after CM Punk and Brock Lesnar, for different reasons, were both removed from the biggest weekend of the year.
”While WWE had been expertly building to a Cody Rhodes vs. Roman Reigns rematch, some sources believe it was done by Johnson to, as one source stated, “save Wrestlemania” after CM Punk and Brock Lesnar, for very different reasons, were taken off the board from the biggest weekend of the year.”
The Rock also pushed hard for the WrestleMania 40 bout with Roman Reigns. Saudi Arabia was initially eyed as the destination for the bout, but things have clearly changed. It remains to be seen whether WWE will end up having The Rock beat Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 40.
