AEW is WWE’s direct competition right now and for the most part, WWE has actively avoided referencing the company. Therefore it comes as no surprise WWE edited out a direct AEW name-drop from The Bump.
Over the past five years, there have been very few references that WWE programming made about AEW, with Sami Zayn directly name-dropping AEW on a 2019 episode of Monday Night RAW.
During this week’s episode of WWE’s The Bump, comedian Jay Pharoah did an impression of Triple H from the Attitude Era. During the conversation, he directly mentioned AEW.
”All these different talents, I got AEW, I got the WWE, I’ve got the WCW, all under one umbrella, so I’m making money, so it doesn’t matter who’s gonna be the…”
To the surprise of absolutely no one, WWE ended up editing out his entire impression and it was quite an abrupt cut at that. This wouldn’t be the first time WWE removed any reference to AEW either.
Perhaps there will come a time when WWE will freely acknowledge AEW without any sort of issue, but right now that seems like a very impossible thing.
