WWE Intercontinental Champion Gunther recently made a surprise announcement on WWE Raw, revealing his intention to take some time off following his victory over The Miz on the December 18th episode.
In a backstage segment, Gunther criticized his Imperium teammates, Ludwig Kaiser and Giovanni Vinci, for not meeting his expectations and demanded they stay on Raw to improve.
The reason for Gunther’s break has now been confirmed by Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter: Gunther’s wife, former pro wrestler Jinny, gave birth to their son on December 27th, 2023. Gunther announced the joyous news on social media.
As of the time of this report, Gunther has held the WWE Intercontinental Championship for an impressive 566 days, solidifying his reign as one of the longest in recent memory. Triple H has praised Gunther, stating that he continues to improve every day.
Gunther initially gained prominence as the longest-reigning WWE United Kingdom Champion before transitioning to NXT in January 2022. He made his main roster debut in April of the same year and captured the WWE Intercontinental Championship on the June 10th episode of SmackDown.
Meanwhile, Jinny, his wife, had a successful career in wrestling and was formerly signed to WWE, featuring prominently on the NXT UK brand. She officially retired from wrestling in January 2023.
With this new addition to their family, Gunther is taking a well-deserved break to spend time with his loved ones, while fans eagerly await his return to the ring to defend his Intercontinental Championship.
