WWE Superstars can sometimes have serious options before they decide to venture to pro wrestling. Football can be an attractive landing pad for some, as people like The Rock, Roman Reigns, and Baron Corbin have found their way to WWE through football. It seems that Trick Williams almost ended up in the XFL.
The Rock started the XFL once again after Vince McMahon’s plan to revive the defunct league didn’t pan out. The pandemic killed McMahon’s XFL reboot, but The Rock’s version picked things up a short time later. It turns out that Trick Williams tried out for McMahon’s version of the XFL reboot, but it didn’t bring him to football.
Trick Williams is a versatile performer. He came from football, where he was a beast on the field. XFL was an option for him as he spoke to Brad Gilmore, the #1 contender for the NXT Title made that very clear.
“I wasn’t into wrestling. I was into football. After college, I had a mini camp tryout with the Philadelphia Eagles, but I got cut. From there, I didn’t know what I was going to do, but I wanted to play football. I had an agent at the time who wanted me to tryout for the XFL. The XFL was owned by Vince McMahon. I filled out this questionnaire for the XFL, and the next day WWE reached out to me.”
WWE wanted Trick Williams to come in for a tryout. The rest, as they say, is history. He obviously found a new home in pro wrestling, one he wasn’t expecting at all.
We will have to see if Trick Williams can dethrone Ilja Dragunov at NXT New Year’s Evil. He has an insane opportunity ahead of him. Only time will tell if he will whoop that trick in the end.
