Tony Schiavone made his pro wrestling debut in 1983 for Jim Crockett Promotions as a member of the broadcast team. Despite taking a few years off from the business, he has had a lengthy career in the industry that continues to this day. Schiavone now suspects that Vince McMahon only wanted to hire him in WWE just so he could fire him.

Tony Schiavone has been part of Tony Khan’s company since the very beginning as a commentator and occasional announcer. He is also part of the company’s talent relations department as AEW’s Senior Producer and Special Advisor to Talent since mid-2022.

Tony Schiavone also worked in WWE from 1989 to 1990 before leaving the company for WCW. While speaking on the latest What Happened When, Schiavone was re-watching the 1990 Royal Rumble, which he called as an announcer.

Schiavone admitted that while jumping back to WCW in 1990 was a mistake at the time, it did allow him to work with the Georgia Bulldogs and Atlanta Braves, which he doesn’t think would have happened if he remained with WWE in 1990. Schiavone then suspected that Vince McMahon would have hired him just to fire him in 2019, if he decided to sign with WWE.

Who knows with the WWE, how long I would have stayed (in 1990) after that because I could have been fired like I would have been had I taken that job five years ago. I would have been fired almost immediately.

There is no question. There is no question, in my mind, that Vince wanted me to come there to fire me. Yeah, I believe that.

He wanted to hire me. I feel bad about Bruce [Bruce Prichard] because Bruce is in the middle of this and Bruce is a friend of mine and I believe anything Bruce tells me is legit and sincere. Vince wanted to hire me to keep me away from this upstart company AEW. COVID happened, they cut back, why not cut back on one of the newest guys that just arrived? There is no question I would have been let go.”

Tony Schiavone is more than happy with his current run in AEW and it is likely he will stick with the company for many years to come. We will have to wait and see what’s next in store for the pro wrestling veteran.
