When AEW first launched in 2019, it was the next best thing in professional wrestling after WWE. Fans were excited about the new product which was set to feature several prominent Indi stars as well as former WWE Superstars Chris Jericho and Cody Rhodes.
AEW started with a blast in its first year. They pulled no punches and told some very intriguing stories in the ring. They also propelled several young stars into the spotlight such as Darby Allin and MJF.
However, over time, the excitement has dwindled and fans have grown more critical of the product in recent years. Most of the matches, while still good, lack a proper storyline. A good example of this is when Orange Cassidy used to defend his AEW International Championship every week against random stars with no proper storytelling.
The addition of two new shows, Rampage and Collision, didn’t make things better as well. The weekly ratings have plummeted since its early days and fans have started to notice. However, the former AEW World Champion still believes that AEW is on top of its game.
During a recent interview with WFAA, Jericho was asked about the recent criticism AEW has received from the fans. Jericho stated that he isn’t too worried about it because it’s their opinion.
“People’s opinions are opinions, especially on social media, when everybody is going to say what they think, with no consequences, and mostly negativity. I think our shows have been great, the matches have been great, and we’ve done a great job of balancing the storylines along with these amazing matches. The most important thing we’ve been doing is building stars. I’m sure people on the Dallas Cowboys or people making movies or if you’re in a band. It’s like being a KISS fan, KISS fans hate everything, but they still buy everything. I find a lot of wrestling fans are like that too. They hate everything.”
“If you listen to public opinion online, I should be shot and killed and never show my face on wrestling again because I’m the worst possible thing that could ever happen to the business, me still being in existence. Either you believe that or you don’t, and I don’t. I don’t think the majority of people do either, but people are still going to say that. It’s your opinion. I never worry about people that don’t like what we do because you can’t convince them, they just don’t like it, and that’s fine. It’s your opinion. I worry about the people that do like our show and worry about making new fans of our show, that’s the most important thing”
While Jericho might be all praise for the AEW product, it’s the fans’ opinion that matters since they are the ones buying the tickets.
