Joey Janela was once known as AEW’s resident bad boy. Now he has taken his talents to GCW, where he is working to elevate the indie wrestling promotion to new heights. That being said, Janela admitted that indie events try to steal WWE fans during WrestleMania weekend.
Joey Janela is a professional wrestler first and foremost and that is what truly matters to him right now. Janela is currently one of the mainstays of GCW and slowly built a reputation of being an extreme pro wrestler there.
Every year during WrestleMania weekend, fans worldwide flock to the host city for the grand WWE event. Concurrently, independent wrestling promotions capitalize on this gathering by hosting their own shows in the same location. This year in Los Angeles, events such as GCW Josh Barnett’s Bloodsport 9 and GCW For The Culture took advantage of the WrestleMania weekend influx of wrestling enthusiasts.
While speaking with Fightful, Joey Janela talked about indie promotions using this strategy every year during WrestleMania weekend. In fact, Janela admitted that they steal WWE fans during WrestleMania weekend every year.
”We’re piggybacking off them. They can do whatever the f*** they want. We’re piggybacking off them. We’re stealing fans that they could have at their events. It’s their f****** weekend, we’re piggybacking. It’s WrestleMania weekend. It’s not IndieMania weekend. They can do whatever they want.”
WrestleMania 40 is scheduled to take place in Philadelphia in 2024. Game Changer Wrestling has already announced its ‘The Collective’ series of events for WrestleMania week next year as well. Regardless, such a practice will carry on every year and that’s unlikely to change anytime soon.
