Will Ospreay’s contract expiry was a major topic of discussion, as fans wondered whether he would make his way to WWE in 2024. Obviously, that will no longer happen as Ospreay is officially All Elite. That said, Ospreay also trusts Tony Khan with the essence of his character.
AEW promised a surprise signing at Full Gear, who turned out to be none other than Will Ospreay. Naturally, this was a huge moment for fans and the British star as well. There was a lot going on behind the scenes about this contract.
While speaking with Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated, Will Ospreay discussed signing with AEW and how his relationship with Tony Khan played a major role. In fact, Ospreay added that he trusts Tony Khan with the essence of his character.
“At the time, Tony asked what I was interested in doing next in my career. I said my focus was on Japan, and he respected that. I’ll always remember how he respected how I felt. I also need to mention that night was the only singles match I’ve ever wrestled against PAC–that’s something I want to throw out there so we can run it back and put it to rest between us.
People need to remember this–since then, I’ve built a trust and respect with Tony. That’s very important to me. When Tony had me work matches for AEW, like I did this summer at All In at Wembley Stadium, he didn’t have to do that. He trusted me. That meant the world to me. Now that I’m coming to AEW, I trust him with the aura of Will Ospreay and the character of Will Ospreay. Tony Khan has genuinely changed my life. In return, I am going to deliver the best matches I can deliver.”
Will Ospreay was also granted special freedom with his AEW contract. Will Ospreay also explained why he signed with AEW in the end. It remains to be seen see how Will Ospreay will be booked, once he becomes a full-time AEW star next year.
