MJF sustained actual injuries during the main event of AEW Full Gear 2023 pay-per-view event, where he participated in two matches in Los Angeles at the Kia Forum. Despite his injury, he isn’t expected to miss television, and he may just compete in the process.
During the Full Gear Zero-Hour pre-show, MJF and Samoa Joe defeated The Gunns in the ROH Tag Team Title match before successfully defending the World Heavyweight Title against Jay White in the main event. All of that work took a toll on the Salt of the Earth.
During the main event, MJF experienced a genuine hip injury that required repositioning after the event. Additionally, he suffered a legitimate shoulder injury. His sobbing promo after Full Gear really reflected how much pain he was in.
During Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer pointed out that MJF had this exact same tear when wrestling Jack Perry at Double or Nothing in 2020.
“The swelling is down on his hip, but the pain is not down. He’s hurting on the hip. The shoulder is, I guess, the more serious of the two.”
“But this tear is worse than that one, so it’s a pretty big tear. But guys work on torn labrums all the time.”
It was noted that MJF will still wrestle Samoa Joe at Worlds End on December 30th. That being said, he may also wrestle in the interim period, because that injury is one that wrestlers have worked through in the past. Only time will tell what they end up doing.
The positive news is that he won’t be absent from TV appearances and has no intentions of undergoing surgery to address the torn labrum, which he confirmed on Monday. After all, Tony Khan doesn’t need to lose any more stars at this point.
