WWE has been known to do certain things that some fans have labeled as petty, breaking records of Superstars who are not in the company’s favor, and denying them screen time in highlight video packages. It appears that they haven’t been trying to do this with CM Punk.

CM Punk held the WWE Championship for an impressive 434 days from November 20th, 2011, to January 27th, 2013. Recently, WWE Hall of Famer Road Dogg shared insights into whether the company’s higher-ups had initially intended for AJ Styles to surpass Punk’s lengthy reign.

AJ Styles embarked on his second WWE Championship reign, which spanned 371 days from November 7th, 2017, to November 13th, 2018. During this time, there were strong speculations that some within WWE contemplated the idea of having The Phenomenal One surpass Punk’s remarkable 434-day reign.

Road Dogg, who served as SmackDown’s lead writer throughout Styles’ year-long WWE Championship reign, delved into whether Punk’s extensive championship reign influenced the booking of AJ Styles on his Oh You Didn’t Know? podcast.

“It’s not. You know when you put the title on a guy, he’s gonna have it for a minute, unless he’s The Iron Sheik, unless he’s just the guy to get it to the other guy. But you don’t think like that. You have conversations way before that about, ‘Hey, what if we put the title on X?’ And then he goes, ‘Okay, let’s just start from there. Who are his opponents?'”

CM Punk doesn’t show up on WWE programming anymore, and they don’t use him in highlight videos, or mention his name. That’s not to say that there was any heat between the two sides. Right now, there is certainly nothing going on regarding Punk’s WWE return. The only reports from credible outlets about that possibility say that there are no active discussions between the two parties.
