The wrestling world is abuzz with speculation about the future of IWGP United States Champion Will Ospreay, whose contract with NJPW is set to expire in February 2024. While many believe he might sign with AEW, a recent Twitter exchange with Seth Rollins has fans speculating about a potential jump to WWE.
Ospreay teased the possibility of leaving NJPW during a promo ahead of his match with Shota Umino. Despite retaining his IWGP United States and United Kingdom Championships against Umino, he was confronted by Jon Moxley and David Finlay, setting up a three-way match at Wrestle Kingdom 18.
Dave Meltzer, speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, suggested that WWE is “absolutely in the picture” for Ospreay’s signing when his contract expires on February 1. He emphasized that while nothing is definite, both WWE and AEW are potential destinations for Ospreay, and he will likely choose the best offer between the two.
“When he first comes in, it’s kind of like ‘we’re getting this Ospreay and Moxley match ruined, because they’re doing a three-way with Finlay’. Except that, you’ve got to realize, they’ve got to look out for their own business. You know, Ospreay is on the way out, and might be, he certainly teased WWE today because him and Seth Rollins tweeted back and forth.”
“I would not say anything is definite with Ospreay, but people who think that it’s a guarantee it’s AEW, just put it this way, WWE is absolutely in the picture. I’ve said this before, but WWE is in the picture, AEW is in the picture, it’s whoever’s going to give him the best offer, and he’s going to go for both sides.”
Ringside News exclusively reported a few weeks back that WWE may be prepared to offer Ospreay a deal. When asked about his status, a tenured source within the company confirmed WWE interest, and remarked “ask me again in a couple of weeks,” indicating that something could be going on between both parties.
Right now, Ospreay’s future in professional wrestling is uncertain, and fans eagerly await his decision as the wrestling landscape continues to evolve. It will be very interesting to see where he ends up next.
