John Cena has seen a lot in WWE during his time as a Superstar. His actions helped define the Ruthless Aggression Era, but there is still a big question about the current era of WWE that we are living through today. For John Cena, this current generation is missing something crucial.
John Cena had a successful WWE career, becoming a prominent figure in the wrestling world. He earned numerous championships and accolades during his tenure, and his impact on the industry is undeniable. Cena’s journey in WWE was marked by memorable feuds and iconic moments, and he remains a respected name among fans and peers. That being said, his wisdom is also looked at as a veteran with a lot of knowledge to share at this point.
While speaking to After the Bell, John Cena was asked about this current era in WWE, and how it will be remembered. Cena went on to say that this current generation of talent is missing a “frontman,” someone who can define the generation.
“It needs what I’m not sure it can produce, and that’s a just a state of where everything is right now it kinda corrects itself, so we’re in a day and age where it needs a frontman, and that’s what will define what an era is, because it takes on the personality traits of its top star.”
“I don’t know if, all things considered, the crowd is so mixed that if the company puts its faith behind an individual, the knee-jerk reaction of the fans, even if they liked the guy last week, will be, ‘F*ck you you’re not gonna tell me who I like.’ So, the audience is also tipping the scales of not letting this happen, universal popularity will never happen, because someone will see it, and get onto it and be like, ‘he seems to be getting popular, let’s stop this right now.'”
John Cena went on to say that he’s seen that very thing happen to “people who were darlings of that underground crew make it, and as soon as they make it the rug is pulled out from under him.”
John Cena entered WWE without a ton of experience on the indies. He wasn’t an “indie darling,” but he was certainly polarizing. Only time will tell how this era of WWE will be remembered, but John Cena can attest to the idea that they may be missing something.
