AEW put a lot of faith in Bryan Danielson to remain healthy, but that plan hasn’t worked out very well. He is out of action once again with an injury, a broken orbital bone this time around that will require surgery. Through it all, Danielson’s retirement is still looming in the future.
There was a fear that Bryan Danielson would have to retire last year when he suffered a concussion. He was able to make it back to the ring, where he hasn’t remained injury-free since then. At least, he’s been able to prevent any further concussions.
During Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer noted that it seems Bryan Danielson’s AEW contract is up in September 2024. There is no way to know what could happen to extend that deal, but The American Dragon seems pretty certain about hanging up his boots.
“Hopefully he can finish the next however many months he has. He didn’t put a timeline exactly on next year when he’s gonna be done. You know, in theory his contract would be over in September. Obviously, Tony could extend it, but Tony Khan isn’t going to be a dirty guy if Bryan wants it to be over, you know that he’s gonna be finished at the end of this contract, and he wants to be finished. There’s nothing you can do if the guy wants to quit.”
It was also noted that “he can’t go to WWE” if Bryan Danielson quits, but odds are Bryan Danielson wouldn’t want to go back to WWE. He really means it when he says that he wants to wrap up his in-ring career and slow down considerably. Now it appears that we are approaching that date far sooner than anyone would really prefer. Sadly, he may miss NJPW Wrestle Kingdom on January 4th as well.
We will have to see what pro wrestling is like after Bryan Danielson retires again. This call is 100% his own to make, and it’s anyone’s guess if he will eventually change his mind. At this point, all signs point toward AEW getting Bryan Danielson’s last matches before he retires.
