WWE Hall of Famer Eric Bischoff has been part of the pro wrestling industry for decades now and while he remains a controversial figure, there is no denying his influence in the business. Bischoff has largely been critical of AEW and now he has gone after Tony Khan for using his mother during a recent social media meltdown in his attacks directed at WWE.
Last week’s episode of WWE NXT beat AEW Dynamite in terms of ratings by a huge margin, which ended up becoming a huge topic of discussion. Prior to the head-to-head battle, Tony Khan threw shade at McMahon for his assault allegations. He then went after Vince McMahon once again after AEW Dynamite lost to NXT.
Tony Khan would then throw shade at The Undertaker and John Cena for failing to pull enough viewers for NXT. Tony Khan then stated that WWE avatar accounts attacked his mother after a near-death experience, making it clear that is when the business became personal for him.
While speaking on his 83 Weeks podcast, Eric Bischoff addressed Tony Khan’s recent social media antics, including the fact he brought up his mother in relation to WWE fans attacking him. Bischoff went off on Khan for his actions and stated that he did no one any favors.
”I think he went way too far. If I had a relationship with Tony that he would listen to anything that I had to say – it would be to not sell. This is not the time to pull your pants down and show the world your ass. This is not the time to overreact, this is not the time to get overly emotional, this is not the time to bring something as personal as he did with regard to his mother’s health and tie it into the evil WWE.”
“This is not the time. He may feel that way and I’m sure Tony has family and friends he can talk to. But talking about how much you hate a certain amount of the audience with your heart and soul – it was not the time. Even if he believes it, it was not the time.”
“Tony the individual did not do himself any favors and Tony Khan – the President of AEW did not do the brand any favors and he did not do the network he’s in a partnership with any favors. You have to have a level of judgment.”
AEW also doesn’t have any approval procedure in place for Tony Khan’s tweets on social media. Regardless, one can only hope Tony Khan will view this as a learning experience and do better next time.
