AEW Dynamite Title Tuesday was the first time in a year that AEW went head-to-head with NXT, and they ended up losing this time around. That said, it wasn’t the only story coming out of the show as Khan was heavily criticized for an angle with antisemitic implications.
As seen on this week’s episode of AEW Dynamite, The Bullet Club Gold came out and made fun of MJF after last week’s events. This included Juice Robinson bringing out a roll of quarters with “FRIEDMAN” written across and stating that he would throw coins at his face, which infuriated MJF.
Many fans were outraged by this segment due to its anti-semitic nature, especially as the ongoing conflict in Israel continues to make headlines. Outlets including TMZ and Awful Announcing have covered the story, with Awful Announcing even reporting that Tony Khan has privately contacted one online critic of the controversial angle.
Military Intelligence Officer Travis Akers took to Twitter and quoted the TMZ article, noting that the segment made him change the channel and added that it made him stop being a fan of AEW. He would then post the replies Tony Khan gave him in his DMs regarding the controversial segment.
This is how Tony Khan responded to my critique of using an anti-Semitic storyline. Instead of addressing a legitimate concern, he says “it’s not doing much good.”
Thousands of fans have expressed disappointment about the poorly-timed angle. This is not how you respond to them.
Yes, Tony reached out via DM. However, we are having an on-going conversation now regarding the angle and my concerns about the anti-Semitic content
MJF also addressed criticism of the angle and made it clear that he wanted the angle to ask difficult questions, using professional wrestling as a medium. Regardless, we certainly hope Tony Khan learned from his mistake and never repeats it again.
