Mercedes Mone walked out of WWE over a year ago, and she took her time before appearing at Wrestle Kingdom for NJPW. Although an ankle injury put her on the bench for a while, all signs point to the former Sasha Banks making her way to AEW eventually. Tony Khan needs to play things intelligently in this instance.
Adam Copeland debuted for AEW at WrestleDream, but the aftermath did not see the viewership spike that Dynamite wanted. Now, with Adam Copeland’s in-ring debut scheduled for October 10th’s Title Tuesday edition of AEW Dynamite, WWE loaded NXT up with talent like a main roster premium live event.
During his 83 Weeks podcast, Eric Bischoff sent out a good piece of advice to Tony Khan. If he’s going to get Mercedes Mone for his company, then he needs to make sure not to use her debut in a way that WWE will be able to “cream” them, because that just makes the talent look bad.
“The smartest thing that Tony Khan could have done is, and I said this two years ago, shut up and wrestle, and quit trying to focus on WWE. Quit trying to convince people that you’re competitive, because you’re f*cking not. And you’re just making yourself look bad by trying to convince other people that you are. Just put on the best show you can put on, that’s all.”
“If you’ve got a chance to get Mercedes Mone, and that’s a valid opportunity, don’t do it on a night when you’re gonna get drawn and quartered, just don’t, because that just reflects badly on her. Especially with the Edge thing, because they brought him in, and they did it right, but it didn’t have the result they wanted, and that didn’t make Edge look good, and it’s not his fault at all, but if there’s a Mercedes Mone, don’t try to pull a rabbit out of your hat, because you’re gonna get creamed anyway, and you don’t want that to be a reflection of your talent.”
Adam Copeland is a huge WWE Superstar, and a Hall of Famer, but even his name couldn’t bring a huge viewership spike for AEW Dynamite. Only time will tell how AEW does against NXT this week, as WWE is bringing John Cena, Paul Heyman, Cody Rhodes, and Asuka to the Performance Center. The Undertaker will very likely make an appearance as well.
AEW spent a lot of time focusing on WWE during the company’s early days. That trend has continued in a lot of ways, and it may have cost them valuable support in the process. Hopefully, Tony Khan can do right by his roster, because AEW’s locker room is full of talented people who want to put on the best show possible.
