Update: Ringside News has an exclusive follow-up to this article to tell you exactly how much WWE really cares about AEW.
Original: WWE carried on for a while without openly paying much attention to AEW. It is undeniable that there is a battle for viewership now, especially after the company loaded up NXT next week to combat AEW Dynamite’s Title Tuesday show. That being said, there could be a lot more to unpack in this story before everything is said and done.
Cody Rhodes, Brian Pillman Jr, and Jade Cargill left AEW for WWE. Only time will tell who is next. At this point, the pro wrestling landscape could be filled with stars jumping companies, much like AEW fans saw with Adam Copeland’s WrestleDream debut.
The Wrestling Observer Newsletter noted that they were told by someone in WWE that this war with AEW could become something close to the battles they had with TNA or WCW years ago. This is just the beginning, and it appears that history could repeat itself.
One person in WWE noted that they believe the wrestling war will turn into WCW or TNA or Bellator as the competition in the sense there will be signings of older talent from WWE with names while WWE will take AEW’s younger talent (Cargill being the first example) and this is history repeating itself. The claim is that a pipeline has developed and some of the younger AEW stars are already talking about leaving when their deals are up.
It was also noted that even in AEW, some individuals express similar concerns, acknowledging that there are wrestlers considering leaving the company. The hope is that the number of departures remains minimal, as AEW’s reputation as a lower-level wrestling promotion wouldn’t be beneficial. It’s expected that talent movement will occur in both directions, as has been the case, with WWE expressing interest in acquiring younger talent.
