WWE released a number of members of their roster a week after they fired over 100 employees from their corporate headquarters. WWE hasn’t actually let the Department of Labor know how many people they cut, but it was a lot. In the midst of those talent cuts, NXT also had to scrap a lot of plans.

During his backstage report podcast, Sean Sapp noted that some people in NXT were very upset when Mustafa Ali was fired. After all, they were using him, and they also had big plans for him. It wasn’t stated what those plans were, but they were apparently stretching out until WrestleMania season next year.

“People I spoke to in NXT were unhappy about Mustafa Ali’s release. They had plans for him until almost WrestleMania season next year. I know a lot of people said, ‘yeah, well Mustafa Ali asked for his release.’ — Yeah two years ago! Things change. He was working with Shawn Michaels now. Satisfying stuff. He was getting working on an injury to make this NXT run happen as well. He was banged up.”

Mustafa Ali was getting another chance in NXT, and it appeared that he was enjoying himself. Then he was released out of the blue, two years after he actually asked for his release. It’s also worth noting that Mustafa Ali asked for his WWE release when his career was in a very different place.

We will keep an eye on Mustafa Ali’s future in pro wrestling. He may have a good friend in AEW who could get a word in Tony Khan’s ear about signing him. Of course, he has a 90-day non-compete clause that still needs to wind down.
