The world of professional wrestling has embraced many stars who have eventually gone on to become successful in other professions after leaving pro wrestling. Russ Francis is one such person, who would find success in the NFL. Unfortunately, we are sad to report that Russ Francis has passed away at the age of 70.

According to a report by The Adirondack Daily Enterprise, Russ Francis, who recently purchased the Lake Placid Airways scenic tour business, was on a Cessna 177 Cardinal alongside McSpadden. Right after takeoff from Lake Placid Airport in upstate New York, the aircraft experienced an “emergency” at around 4 p.m. on Sunday, September 30th, but they failed to return safely to the runway to land.

Russ Francis’ father Ed, had a notable career as a professional wrestler, primarily active in Hawaii. Eventually, he sold his territory to Peter Maivia, The Rock’s grandfather. In 1978, Russ and his father held the NWA Big Times Tag Team Championship, but they lost it to John Studd and Buddy Rogers.

Apart from his wrestling endeavors, Francis also had a stint in the NFL, playing for both the New England Patriots and the San Francisco 49ers. He didn’t limit himself to football, as he also ventured into wrestling across various territories. One notable moment in his wrestling career was when he challenged Nick Bockwinkel for the AWA World Championship during his time with the AWA. He also made appearances in Canada’s Northwest Promotions.

In 1986, Francis joined a group of NFL players participating in a WWF Wrestlemania 2 Battle Royal in Chicago, ultimately won by Andre The Giant. Francis’ wrestling career came to a close in 1987, where he teamed up with Jimmy Snuka for several appearances during that year.

We here at Ringside News would like to offer our deepest condolences to Russ Francis’ family and friends during this sad time. RIP.
