Matt Riddle was released from WWE a day after the rest of the roster cuts. WWE made quite a statement with that cut, and now we are getting even more information about the issues Riddle had prior to his untimely exit.

The King of Bros was involved in a few controversies outside that JFK Airport experience. You also can’t forget the controversy surrounding his leaked sex tape. That went down after he got out of rehab, a stint that cost him the latter portion of 2022 from the ring.
The Wrestling Observer Newsletter noted that Matt Riddle got heat in WWE for going off-script during a live promo. He wasn’t supposed to go into Randy Orton’s injury, but he did. That caught him some negative attention backstage.
“Riddle also had heat with management at one point right after that for going off the script and putting over Orton on a live television interview when talking about how much pain Orton was in during the latter stages of their team and before the injury angle was shot. While praised for the promo going behind the scenes and being real, it was not what was scripted for him. His role after that point was being a popular babyface who had good matches, played his naive stoner gimmick, but was mostly there to put over the pushed heels such as a program where he continually lost to Gunther.”
It was also reported that, “Several in the company noted that he probably would have been among the top stars in the company, but because of the constant negative stuff that had come out, they were not going to push him past mid-level at this point.”
We will have to see what is next for Matt Riddle. His name is coming up in Impact Wrestling’s offices. That being said, he could have other options out there, and with companies that won’t tightly script anything for him.
Matt Riddle’s WWE release came as a shock for fans, but it wasn’t about budget cuts or his talent. He is incredibly gifted, but Riddle continued to have issues around every corner, it seems. That ultimately led to his release.
