The world of professional wrestling is an ever-changing landscape, with its primary focus over the years being to maintain the suspension of disbelief among its audience. This is notably called ‘kayfabe’ and it appears the word has been officially recognized in the Merriam-Webster dictionary.

The Merriam-Webster dictionary added 690 new words in September 2023, as they their list of the latest additions. Alongside words such as mid, simp, rizz, simp, smashburger and edgelord, they added ‘kayfabe.’

Naturally, anyone who has basic knowledge of kayfabe knows just how crucial kayfabe is to the world of professional wrestling, in order to maintain that suspension of disbelief for fans.

kayfabe noun 1 : the tacit agreement between professional wrestlers and their fans to pretend that overtly staged wrestling events, stories, characters, etc., are genuine; broadly : tacit agreement to behave as if something is real, sincere, or genuine when it is not 2 : the playacting involved in maintaining kayfabe
