Carmelo Hayes worked hard to make himself one of the highlights of NXT. His impeccable in-ring skills and athleticism helped him win over fans as well. He has developed a lot in NXT and is the current NXT Champion. That said, it appears Shawn Michaels told him that he wasn’t ready for the main roster.
Carmelo Hayes eventually defeated Bron Breakker earlier this year to become the NXT Champion. He would then go on to defend his title successfully and has continued to become a major draw for the brand.
Hayes has competed in a handful of matches on the main roster, with his match against Finn Balor being the only one on WWE television. While speaking to The Messenger, Carmelo Hayes revealed that Shawn Michaels told him that he wasn’t ready for the main roster and disclosed what kind of advice the Heartbreak Kid gave him instead.
“He gave me a really good analogy. “‘I don’t want you to start building your roof when you haven’t laid the groundwork yet. You’re already trying to put in your windows and you haven’t even finished doing your thing.’ That’s where we’re at now.’
I was like, ‘Yeah, let me continue to build brick by brick by brick,'” Hayes added. “When I’m able to get to that point where it’s time to put a roof on this thing, I’ll go to the main roster and start building that roof.
[Michaels] hears the people talking,” Hayes acknowledged. “He knows what the fans want. Every time I’m in a match, it’s like, ‘If Melo loses, he’s getting called up.’ He just wants to assure me, ‘Hey, make sure you’re focusing on what’s in front of you.'”
Carmelo Hayes will be defending his NXT Championship against Ilja Dragunov at NXT No Mercy on Saturday, September 30th. We’ll have to wait and see who will end up winning the match.
