John Cena’s role as the Peacemaker certainly won him over with the fans. So much so, that he currently has his own Peacemaker spinoff series. Peacemaker enabled the expansion of the DC Extended Universe into HBO Max storytelling. An effort that was created and primarily directed by James Gunn. Now it appears Cena will be reprising his role in James Gunn’s revamped DCU.
The HBO Max series was a follow-up to The Suicide Squad. It followed John Cena’s titular character as he’s engaged in yet another operation for A.R.G.U.S. to find parasitic aliens called butterflies. Because of the action scenes, the performances from its cast, which included Cena, Danielle Brooks, and Freddie Stroma, and Gunn’s distinctive humor and writing, Peacemaker received similar critical praise as The Suicide Squad.
HBO Max quickly approved Peacemaker season 2 with Gunn resuming to write and direct all-new episodes, the number of which has not yet been disclosed. James Gunn confirmed on Threads that John Cena will be a part of the DCU’s future as he will reprise his role as Peacemaker.
Xolo Maridueña will continue playing Blue Beetle in the DCU, as Viola Davis will Amanda Waller, and John Cena will Peacemaker.
That said, the second season is unlikely to happen anytime soon. We’ll have to wait and see when shooting will begin for the highly anticipated second season of the hit DC live-action series.
