AEW saw a new International Champion at Grand Slam, but that was not the plan. Jon Moxley sustained a concussion, and he made a call to do what is best for business at that moment, and he took the pin for Fenix, making the luchador the new champion. Now, AEW is changing up their plans.
Jon Moxley sustained an injury early in the match, and many speculated that it wasn’t necessarily due to the criticized piledriver move. Regardless, Moxley left the scene under his own strength and received a checkup from the BCC and Tony Khan. He gave indications to individuals that he was in satisfactory condition.
Nevertheless, the complications didn’t stop there. A decision was made on the fly during the match, resulting in Rey Fenix winning the AEW International Championship. This not only impacted the match but also led to immediate alterations on AEW Dynamite and potentially for WrestleDream.
Sean Sapp noted behind his paywall that AEW originally planned for a “non-AEW” wrestler to come out and confront Jon Moxley at AEW Dynamite. That is apparently changing up now since Mox is injured. There was also “heavy heat” on referee Rick Knox after the incident, because he didn’t count to three the first time.
“Fightful has learned that originally, a non- AEW wrestler was supposed to come out on AEW Dynamite and challenge Jon Moxley for WrestleDream. However, when the match result changed, so did the plan to come out and make a challenge. We haven’t learned who it was.
We were contacted by several talent on the roster that said while they like Rick Knox, there was heavy heat on him within the company, as this wasn’t the first time something like this has happened and a wrestler wasn’t protected.”
Jon Moxley must pass concussion protocols before he can return to the ring. Hopefully, that won’t take long. The last report we received said that he was not experiencing any “weirdness” after the concussion.
