Iyo Sky had a stellar run in NXT where she even became the NXT Women’s Champion, but her status in WWE was under question last year, as many believed she was going to leave WWE. That didn’t happen as she debuted on the main roster at SummerSlam last year and it appears her WWE contract was set to expire one month after last year’s SummerSlam.

Following the Raw Women’s Championship match at WWE SummerSlam 2022, Bayley returned alongside Dakota Kai and Iyo Sky, as Damage CTRL made their debut. After more than a year, the faction won the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships and Iyo Sky is now the WWE Women’s Champion.

While speaking with Tokyo Sports, Iyo Sky talked about her WWE career so far. The WWE Women’s Champion revealed that her WWE contract was set to expire one month after last year’s SummerSlam.

”I thought about it (returning to Japan). It wasn’t that I didn’t like America, but that if there was nothing I could do here, I thought that if I went to Japan, there would be more things I could do… and I have grown a lot since I left Japan, so I was confident that I could show a different kind of work in Japan this time.

It was my policy not to give up… I set a goal to work hard until the contract was over, and I stayed there for about a year. I appeared at SummerSlam (2022) when my contract was about to end in one month.”

Iyo Sky is set to defend her WWE Women’s Championship against Asuka on this week’s episode of Friday Night Smackdown. We will have to wait and see whether she will be able to retain the title in the end.
