WWE Hall of Famer has a lot of respect for his peers in professional wrestling and that includes Brock Lesnar, with whom he has a very close friendship. However, it appears Angle came to know about his sister’s passing just one day before a legendary match with Lesnar.
Brock Lesnar has squared off against numerous top WWE Superstars during his time in the company and that includes his high-profile feud with Kurt Angle. After all, their feud was the highlight for many back in 2003.
Kurt Angle also put over Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 19, dropping the WWE Championship to The Beast Incarnate. On the September 16, 2003 taping of WWE SmackDown, Lesnar and Kurt Angle squared off against each other in a “60-minute Ironman Match” for the WWE Championship.
While speaking on the latest edition of The Joe Rogan Experience, Kurt Angle recalled finding out that his sister had passed away just a day before his Ironman match with The Beast Incarnate.
“There was one point in my career where my brother called me. I was at a house show and it was the night before I was going to have the biggest match of my career with Brock Lesnar the next day. An Ironman match on SmackDown. My brother calls me and says, ‘Hey, your sister just died of a heroin overdose.’ And it crushed me.’
So, here I am in a hotel room. I looked at my pills, I said, ‘F*** it!’ I took 20 of ’em, put ’em in my mouth. I didn’t wake up till 5 O’clock in the afternoon the next day, and I had the biggest match of my career. We had to be there at 1 but I didn’t get there till 5:30. I ended up doing it. The WWE was trying to calm me the whole time. ‘You can go home, plan the funeral for your sister, you don’t have to do this match.'”
Kurt Angle also regretted not having huge merchandise sales like Steve Austin and John Cena. He also turned down a WWE Draft appearance. It remains to be seen what the future holds for Angle as a WWE return could happen.
