AEW had some surprises in store for fans at Grand Slam in Arthur Ashe Stadium. Jon Moxley defended his International Title against Rey Fenix in a highly competitive match that featured intense action both inside and outside the ring.
The finish of the match came unexpectedly, as Rey Fenix executed two of his finishing moves and secured the pinfall victory. Surprisingly, Jon Moxley made no effort to kick out, resulting in the crowning of a new champion. While some found this finish unusual, Jon Moxley was able to recover and exit the ring unaided during the subsequent commercial break.
Fenix actually hit two of those finishers, because Moxley simply did not kick out of the first one. The referee stopped counting, and fans were upset. Then Fenix nailed his second finisher and clinched the win. This was an apparent botch, and many called it out in a big way.
They said on commentary that Jon Moxley was able to leave on his own during the commercial break. We’re hoping that Jon Moxley is okay, but the ending of that International Title match certainly didn’t end as planned.
