The Rock is one of the biggest names in Hollywood, but he will always be remembered as The People’s Champion by the WWE Universe. Fans miss seeing him in the ring, and it appears that plans were nixed for that to happen at WrestleMania this year.
During a conversation on the Pat McAfee show, The Rock went through his first WrestleMania match against John Cena. He was injured during the contest, but he gutted it out to finish the match. It turns out that he was supposed to come back for another match this year.
Ringside News exclusively reported that The Rock was a lock for WrestleMania. It turns out that was the case after all. Dwayne Johnson went on to explain that he even met with Vince McMahon and Nick Khan to lock the match down, and it was supposed to happen at WrestleMania in SoFi Stadium.
“The Rock vs Roman Reigns at WrestleMania, it was locked. We were doing it. No, we were doing it. Let me just tell you. In the beginning of 2022, Nick Khan, who I’ve known for years, he’s the man, he was very instrumental in bringing me and Vince together in LA, this was the beginning of 2022, and we broke out Teremana and toasted life, and toasted the business we love. About an hour later we talked about me headlining WrestleMania with Roman Reigns at SoFi, and we shook hands and we hugged right there and we left the table and said ‘let’s do this.'”
“So, then we had a year to really think about this. The thought was ‘let’s not do something good, let’s not do something great, let’s do something unprecedented.’ The idea was ‘what can we do for the fans that has never been done before.'”
The Rock explained that they didn’t do the match, because they couldn’t figure out the one thing that they could do for the fans that would be exceptional. That being said, the idea is not off the table.
We will have to see if The Rock returns to WWE. He did not confirm it during this Pat McAfee interview, but he certainly revealed a lot about what went on behind the scenes to build WrestleMania 39.
