Gable Steveson is someone that WWE has had their eye on for years. He’s under contract, but he has made a rare appearance here and there. That being said, his recent activity is very interesting.
This week, it was revealed that Gable Steveson had opted out of participating in the 2023 Senior World Championships scheduled for later this month. During Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer discussed Steveson’s situation.
Dave Meltzer mentioned his uncertainty regarding Gable Steveson’s future in wrestling and whether WWE would permit him to compete again. He found the situation perplexing because there had been significant attention on Steveson’s past failure to secure a world championship in amateur wrestling, despite his prior victories at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships and the Olympics.
“This is a real weird one. So he’s not doing the world championships, is the jist of the story. This whole thing is so strange because he not only competed — I mean, he competed in two events to get to where he was going to do the world championships, and then he doesn’t compete in the world championships — and he dominated in the events.”
“Ultimately, it was so weird to me because last week he was still listed as doing it, but every time I asked people at WWE, ‘Is he doing it?’ I never got an answer … They had to approve him doing it. So they approved him going back to the U.S. for the nationals this year. They approved him doing that. He blitzed everybody. Then Final X, where he would face Mason Parris for the shot, he beat him in two straight matches, dominated in both matches as well.”
Earlier this year, Gable Steveson returned to amateur wrestling and secured a victory at the US Open in April. He also participated in wrestling again at Final X in June.
Gable Steveson is someone that WWE might want to protect at this point. Needless to say, him pulling out of the Senior World Championships could be a very complicated situation with many layers.
