CM Punk was fired from WWE a few years ago, and they sent him that release on his wedding day. Just last week, Punk was fired from AEW over much different circumstances, but you can never say never in pro wrestling.
CM Punk and WWE collaborating appeared unlikely for a long time, but those familiar with him claim the concept was considered from his side.
Following the Brawl Out incident at All Out last year, CM Punk was sidelined due to surgery to address an injury he suffered at All Out 2022. During this period, tensions remained high between AEW and Punk, although he maintained communication with AEW founder Tony Khan.
Sean Sapp noted behind Fightful’s paywall that CM Punk was telling people that he was open to a WWE return.
Those close to Punk claim that around December 2022, Punk was open to leaving AEW, and even encouraged the idea so he could make a WWE return. Specifically, we’ve heard that he wanted to appear at the 2023 Royal Rumble. However, we’ve not heard and traction to WWE having interest in such a thing, or that AEW were actually entertaining the idea of giving Punk his release at that point.
The report also went on to note that, “One of the rumored ideas that Punk had – not confirmed with he or his camp – actually made its way back to some WWE talent. The idea was that Punk would return at the 2023 WWE Royal Rumble, and work match at WWE WrestleMania against the person who would eventually eliminate him. Word within WWE was that Kevin Owens was the name thrown around. He’d go on to main event night one of WrestleMania.”
CM Punk’s departure from AEW was certainly a rocky one, but the whole situation would have probably played out a lot differently in WWE. Only time will tell if this brings CM Punk back to WWE, but he certainly has enough free time on his hands.
