During John Cena’s promo on SmackDown this week, John Cena was told that he was hosting WWE Payback just before he went out to speak to fans. It turns out that this isn’t far from the truth.

Sean Sapp noted behind Fightful’s paywall that John Cena was really told about his WWE Payback role on Friday. This didn’t give him a lot of time to prepare what to say about the gig.

“The idea to have John Cena host didn’t occur until very recently, and he wasn’t told until Friday.”

This is interesting, because we reported on Thursday night that John Cena was expected to host Payback. Apparently, he doesn’t keep up on the WWE news cycle.

On a semi-related note, CM Punk’s AEW firing is also a big topic of conversation backstage at Payback. Also, those AEW fans in Chicago have already started an inventive Punk chant.
