John Cena is making a return to WWE, and a big match or two could be in his near-future. He is only able to do this because Hollywood is at a standstill, but WWE is going to make the most of this while they can.
As we exclusively reported, Ringside News reached out to ask about John Cena’s WWE return, and how long this has been planned. We were told by a tenured member of the team that, “Cena has been discussing a return since the SAG strike.” It appears that Cena has found a way to stay busy during his downtime.
Sean Sapp noted on Fightful’s paywall that this run for John Cena is “unexpected.” It was also noted that if Hollywood’s big strike concludes early, then that might end Cena’s fun in WWE once again. That being said, they aren’t worried about John Cena missing any of the SmackDown dates he’s advertised for.
Cena has been announced for dates through September and October, in a run that WWE and even Cena didn’t likely expect. Staff, producers and some writers that Fightful had heard from regarding Cena was that his availability came about due to the ongoing strike, and that WWE reached an agreement to bring him in. One higher up said that if he ends up appearing regularly on TV and the strike ends, they’ll wrap up anything he’s involved in, and he’ll return to his outside projects. However, there is no concern about him missing advertised dates in the event that the strike abruptly ends.
John Cena is set to participate in several Smackdown tapings during that timeframe, although it doesn’t guarantee his TV appearances. A couple of years ago, WWE had Cena booked for numerous dates but, for reasons unknown, chose not to feature him on television.
We will have to see what happens next in this situation. Obviously, John Cena’s return to television is a big deal, and it is certain to draw interest.
