Cody Rhodes entered WWE to finish his story, and he got right to work on that in a big way. Sadly, he was not able to beat Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 39, and he ended up on the mat next to a rubber chicken instead. There is a big thought in WWE right now that they made the right decision.
WWE has not placed Cody Rhodes in a championship position since WrestleMania, but he has been very active. The American Nightmare just finished off a trio of matches against Brock Lesnar, one where the Beast Incarnate was injured at SummerSlam.
The Wrestling Observer Newsletter noted that there is a very strong feeling in WWE that they made the right move with Cody Rhodes. At this time, there is a lot that they can do, and things are seemingly wide open for storytelling.
Those in WWE are strong on the idea that growth is proof that the decision not to put the title on Rhodes at that time was the right one, and in theory, someday they will. You could argue that you could have done the Bloodline stuff for the Tribal Chief spot and had Rhodes with the belt and it would have been as good or better, but thus far you can’t argue what has been done has been effective in growth.
Only time will tell how Cody Rhodes’ story ends up in WWE. He is on a roll, and getting huge babyface reactions wherever he goes. Now, it seems that we will have to wait for his next challenge, as SummerSlam seemingly reset the deck in many ways.
Cody Rhodes fixed himself in AEW, so he could never challenge for their World Title, instead carrying the TNT Title a couple of times. Now, we will have to see if WWE’s booking paints him into the same corner, but it’s highly unlikely that will happen.
