AEW Dynamite Results Coverage, Reactions & Highlights For August 9, 2023

Tonight promises another exciting night of action as Hikaru Shida defends the AEW Women’s World Championship against Anna Jay. Also scheduled for tonight is the dream match between The Hardys and the Young Bucks. The complete match card is as follows:

AEW Dynamite Opener:

The opening package for the show airs. The Jericho Appreciation Society is in the ring. Matt Menard introduces Chris Jericho. Jericho’s music plays and he walks to the ring.

Jericho gets on the mic and says the JAS came to the ring without him and he accepts there is some unrest and that’s why he has come out as their friend. Garcia asks him to stop talking and listen to them.

He says he sacrifices so much for Jericho. He chose Jericho over everyone but Jericho hasn’t chosen them. He says because of that he can’t do that anymore. Jake Hager says he is not surprised. He says they knew each other a lot longer but if they have to cut ties tonight, it’s alright. He says he liked that hat and he does not appreciate Jericho. Hager then walks away.

Jericho says their careers are bigger and better since they joined him. He says Anna has a title match tonight and Tay wouldn’t have been a bigger star than she is without him. Tay says she feels sick and she will go have a back and come back to become a champion. She then says she quits. Anna says Jericho helped himself out more than anyone else. She says she is being selfish tonight. She says tonight is about winning the women’s title and not about Jericho. She and Tay walk away.

Parker says he doesn’t want to be doing this. He says he has done everything he could to make him feel proud of himself. He says he has stood by his side but what has Jericho given him? He says he doesn’t have anything else to give him and walks away.

Menard says Jericho was his childhood hero. He says when he got his first paycheck, he bought a Jericho t-shirt. He says Jericho invited him into his home and took him under his wing and the last 18 months have been nothing but a dream for him but it’s never sat right that Eddie Kingston has hated his guts but now he understands why.

Jericho tries to talk but Sammy slaps the mic out of his hands. He says he went from challenging for the world title to fighting his battles. He says he is not going to walk out on him because he is his friend. He says Jericho has a lot of stuff to work out and if he does, then maybe he’ll be here.

*Commercial break*

Renee interviews Jericho. Don Callis walks in and says he is sorry if he played any role in this. Jericho says he has an answer for him and they’ll announce it next week.

The Hardys vs. Young Bucks

Young Bucks’ theme song plays and they come out to the ring. The Hardys’ music hit and they come out to the ring.

The match starts with Matt and Jeff. Jeff hits the atomic drop and follows it with a neckbreaker. Jeff tags out and The Hardys double-team Young Bucks. Nick is sent out of the ring. Matt Hardy attacks Matt Jackson in the corner. Cover! 1….2….kick out. Jeff tags in.

Jeff goes to work on Matt. He tags out and Jeff goes for a corner splash but Nick catches him with the boot. Nick tags in and attacks The Hardys. The Young Bucks hit the risky business on Matt Hardy. Nick dives onto The Hardys.

*Commercial break*

Matt Hardy and Matt Jackson exchange strikes. Matt Hardy with a side effect. Both men tag out. Jeff knocks down Nick. He hits an elbow drop. Cover! 1…2…Matt Jackson breaks it up. Jeff hits the whisper in the wind. Cover! 1….2…..kick out.

Nick superkicks Jeff and the Younbucks superkicks Jeff and they hit the 3D. Cover! 1…2….kick out. Matt hits the twist of fate on Nick. Jeff hits the Swanton bomb. Cover! 1….2….Matt Jackson makes the save. Jeff tags out.

Jeff and Matt Hardy hit the twist of fate. Jeff goes for the whisper in the win but Matt Jackson superkicks his ankle. The Young Bucks hit the BTE trigger on Matt Hardy for the win.

Winner: Young Bucks

Nick Jackson gets on the mic but is interrupted by FTR who come out to the ring. Nick says All In. FTR raise their titles up and walk away.

A video plays from last week with Adam Cole and MJF. MJF says they can go skinny dipping but Cole suggests a trampoline park. MJF seems interested in dodgeball. MJF plays dodgeball with the kids and knocks them out. Cole says he can’t do stuff like that. A girl walks up and asks what they are doing in a trampoline park and calls them nerds. Cole tries to reason with her but she flips him off and Cole gives MJF permission to throw the ball at her.

*Commercial break*

Blackpool Combat Club is backstage. Moxley says Best Friends don’t belong in the ring with them. He says they know they can beat Lucha Bros. Claudio asks Pac did he think he could walk out on them and nothing would happen to him. Yuta says Pac’s injury will keep him off All In. Moxley says they don’t fear death, death fears them.

FTW Championship: Jack Perry (c) vs. RVD

Jack Perry’s music plays and he comes down to the ring. RVD’s music hit and he walks to the ring.

Jack attacks RVD from behind. RVD comes back with a kick to the head. He attacks Jack in the corner. Jack rolls out of the ring. Perry slams RVD’s face into the steel steps. RVD places Jack on the barricade and hits a spinning leg drop.

*Commercial break*

Jack Perry tries to hit the rolling thunder but RVD rolls out of the way. RVD hits a monkey flip on Perry. He places a chair on Perry and hits the rolling thunder. RVD goes for the split-legged moonsault and misses. Perry throws the chair and hits the referee. RVD kicks Perry and climbs the top rope but is stopped.

RVD throws Perry off the top rope through the table on the floor. RVD sends him into the ring and hits a five star frog splash. Cover! There is no referee to count. A new referee comes out. 1….2….kick out. RVD argues with the referee and Perry hits him with a low blow and gets the win.

Winner: Jack Perry (c)

Renee interviews the Lucha Bros. Alex says their symbol means brotherhood. Every time they go out they fight in the spirit of competition but BCC fights to hurt people. Penta says they will show them why they are the best tag team in the universe.

MJF and Adam Cole’s music plays and they come down to the ring. MJF gets on the mic and says apparently there is footage of him insulting the crowd. He says that the footage is heavily edited and fake. He says his favorite plays in the US is the Midwest.

Cole says they are going to be wrestling at All In and he is going to beat him. MJF says Cole wants a little promo battle. Cole insults him. Cole asks him to stop and says he doesn’t want to do a promo battle. Cole says they are going to make history at All In. He says they should go All In and they should have some tag team championship gold around their waist. He says he has had his eye on another set of tag team championships – the ROH World Tag Team Championships.

He says he owes his entire career to ROH. He lists his ROH accolades and says he never won the ROH World Tag Team Championships. He says teams like ReDragon and Briscoe Brothers have won those titles and it’s about time they show how good they are. He then says they should challenge for the ROH World Tag Team Championships at All In Zero Hour.

MJF asks whether Cole wants him to wrestle twice in one night. MJF asks the crowd whether they want to see them become the ROH World Tag Team Champions and the crowd cheers. MJF then challenges Aussie Open for the ROH World Tag Team Titles at All In Zero Hour.

Roderick Strong comes out and says he can’t believe Cole wants to win the tag team titles with MJF and not with him. MJF says he is getting sick and tired of Strong. He says he wants Strong to get in his car, go home and cry into his hello kitty pillow and shake it off.

Strong asks whether Cole is going to stand there and let him talk to him like that. He says Cole was never his true friend. The Kingdom walks out and hugs him. Cole shoves MJF and says he is both of their friends. He apologizes to MJF and they hug it out.

Lucha Bros. vs. Blackpool Combat Club

Jon Moxley’s music plays and he comes out to the ring with Claudio Castagnoli.

*Commercial break*

Lucha Bros. theme song plays next and they attack BCC from behind. They dive onto BCC. Penta attacks Claudio in the corner. He stomps him. Cover! 1…2….kick out. Penta drives Claudio to the mat. Cover! 1….2….kick out. Fenix and Penta superkick Claudio. The go for it again and misses. Claudio takes them out.

Claudio tags out and Moxley attacks Penta in the corner. He hits Penta with a clothesline. Moxley with a double DDT to Lucha Bros. Pent comes back with a slingblade and Claudio takes him out with a clothesline. Yuta attacks Fenis with the title belt and Moxley hit the cutter. Cover! 1…2….kick out.

*Commercial break*

Moxley tags out and Claudio attacks Fenix. Moxley tags in. BCC hit the spike piledriver. Cover! 1….2…kick out. He tags out and they go for the doomsday device and misses Fenix. Fenix rolls through and hits the stomp. He tags out and Penta attacks BCC. Penta tags out and Fenix goes for the frog splash and misses. Claudio with an uppercut and Moxley hit the cutter on Penta. Fenix catches Moxley with a superkick.

Claudio and Fenix exchange strikes. Fenix hits Claudio with a kick. Penta tags in and goes for a dive but Claudio catches him with an uppercut. Moxley tags in and exchanges strikes with Penta. Lucha Bros hit the spike piledrive on Moxley. Cover! 1….2…kick out. Yuta distracts Fenis but Alex pulls him down. Fenix takes out Yuta on the floor. Moxley rolls up Penta for the win.

BCC attacks Lucha Bros. after the match. Claudio wears Penta’s mask and attacks Fenix.

Omega is interviewed backstage. He says he is hoping the Bucks win. He says he will sit down with JR to talk about his future and what he plans to do at All In.

*Commercial break*

Swerve Strickland’s music hit and he comes out with The Embassy. Swerve says no one believed him when he said the Mogul Embassy would take over that’s why they went to see Nick Wayne last week. He says they own the authority and they are above the law. Fox calls out Darby.

Darby Allin comes out and asks Fox to tell these people the whole story. He says he tried to call Fox but he didn’t pick up. He says the only person that could save him was him and so he left. He says Fox got to AEW all by himself. He says he respects Fox and will always credit him for changing his life and reminds him he has some friends too. The lights go out and Sting appears in the ring and chases away the Mogul Embassy. Sting attacks Swerve with the bat. He challenges Swerve for a match at All In.

*Commercial break*

AEW Women’s World Championship: Hikaru Shida (c) vs. Anna Jay

Anna Jay’s music plays and she comes out with Matt Menard and Angelo Parker. Hikaru Shida’s theme song plays and she walks to the ring.

The match starts and Anna takes down Shida. Shida with a jumping knee. Shida attacks her in the corner. Anna slips away and knocks her out of the ring. She sends Shida into the ring and goes to work on her.

*Commercial break*

Shida attacks Anna and hits a suplex. Shida slams her face into the turnbuckle. Anna with a backheel kick. Shida hits her with an enzuigiri. She sets up a chair but Parker distracts her. Anna drives Shida into the steel steps. Anna sends her into the ring. Cover! 1…2…kick out.

Ann locks in the Queenslayer. Shida gets to the ropes. Anna locks in the Queenslayer again but Shida plants her and hits the falcon arrow. Cover! 1…2….kick out. He hits the katana for the win.
