Billy Gunn drew a lot of headlines when he left his boots in the middle of the ring on AEW Collision. This was a surprise for a lot of fans to see the WWE Hall of Famer tease retirement, but they were not alone.

Billy Gunn’s recent alliance with The Acclaimed brought him to new heights late in his career for another ride on top of a wave of fan momentum. He got one more run, where fans chanted along with his catchphrase.

While speaking on Chris Distefano Presents: Chrissy Chaos, Anthony Bowens was asked if he knew that moment would be happening.

“No, I really didn’t. I don’t think the cameras caught it, but I get very emotional when I’m out there because I get connected to the audience, I don’t think I’ve cried in a wrestling ring. I got teary eyed because he stood up, and his face was beat red, and at this point in our careers where Billy has been such a beacon of light for us, he’s been guiding us from the beginning since we joined up with him last year. He guided us to the AEW Tag Team Titles in New York City. He’s been teaching us a ton of stuff every single week. To think about not having him out there with us, it hurts.”

AEW is still letting this storyline play out on television. It’s anyone’s guess how long it will take to complete, but AEW has a couple big events coming up where they could always book sometime to pay this off.

We will have to see where this situation goes from here. Billy Gunn could always make a return to the ring in this story, but he has also had a great career in the ring, and he has accomplished a lot. That being said, there would be no shame in hanging up his boots for good, even if that’s the case.
