As the Wrestling Observer Newsletter noted, “Rey Mysterio was injured on the 7/28 Smackdown show from New Orleans. Mysterio was facing Escobar in a match to determine who would get a U.S. title shot at Theory on 8/11. Escobar was always scheduled to win. Escobar delivered a tope right before the commercial break and when they came back from the break, kept showing Mysterio’s landing and talking about his being injured. Mysterio was actually knocked woozy on a cross bodyblock a few minutes earlier. If you watch the replay you can see him woozy for a second and Escobar holding back. But he got back into the match and they continued the match. Later, as they were about to go to a commercial break, Escobar hit a tope on Mysterio and his head hit the ground hard and he was knocked silly a second time. So because of that, the decision was made to stop the match over precautionary reasons. He did get up after the was in the ring walking around and shook Escobar’s hand and didn’t need help getting to the back. He was fine after the match.”
