Kurt Angle has been open about his wrestling rivalry and matches with Chris Benoit, despite the controversy surrounding Benoit’s actions in 2007. While many in the wrestling industry have chosen to move on from discussing Chris Benoit, Angle continues to talk about him on his podcast and other platforms.
During a Q&A session on the AdFreeShows platform, Angle explained his reasons for continuing to talk about Benoit, emphasizing that he takes into account the feelings of Benoit’s living son, David. Angle pointed out that David Benoit idolizes his father and still holds him in high regard, despite the tragic events that occurred.
Angle expressed his belief that talking about Chris Benoit is essential because it acknowledges the existence and feelings of his living son. By discussing Benoit, Angle believes he can help preserve the memory of a father who means a great deal to his son, despite the terrible actions he committed.
“The thing is, with Chris Benoit, you can’t forget he has a son still, okay? The reason why I talk about him so much is because of his son,” Angle explained. “He has a living son right now that thinks the world of his father. I mean, he’s giving him for what he’s done. There’s no excuse for what Chris had done, but when you have a living human being that absolutely idolized his father, and you’re going to say, ‘I don’t want to talk about Chris Benoit because he’s a piece of shit and what he did to his family is horrible.’ What is that going to do for that kid?”
The former WWE Champion also addressed the negative feedback he sometimes receives for discussing Chris Benoit. He clarified that while he doesn’t condone what Benoit did, he can’t ignore the fact that Benoit was one of the greatest wrestlers of all time. Angle acknowledged Benoit’s in-ring skills and performance, stating that he was the best performer he had ever shared the ring with.
“A lot of times when I talk about Chris, I get negative feedback on social media, but you can’t excuse the fact that he was one of the greatest wrestlers of all time. You can’t ignore that. It’s really difficult to do that. Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t condone anything he’s done, but I know this, Chris was the best in-ring performer I’ve ever been in the ring with, and I can’t lie about that.”
Kurt Angle aims to navigate a delicate balance between acknowledging the wrestler’s accomplishments and the tragic events of his personal life. He wants to be respectful of Benoit’s son while still recognizing the complexity of the situation.
