WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan is one of the biggest and most influential names in the pro wrestling business and has accomplished a lot in the industry. He had iconic feuds with many WWE Superstars and that includes The Rock. Now it appears Vince McMahon wanted Hogan to be the face in his match against The Rock at WrestleMania X8.
Following Vince McMahon’s acquisition of WCW, The nWo made its way to WWE. The iconic faction would also compete at WrestleMania X8, with Hulk Hogan squaring off against The Rock.
WrestleMania X8 took place on March 17, 2002, at the SkyDome in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. This mega card featured Hulk Hogan vs The Rock in an Icon vs Icon encounter. It would see The Rock defeat The Hulkster after one of the most well-received matches in WrestleMania history.
While speaking with Theo Von, The Hulkster reflected on his match with The Great One and revealed that Vince McMahon wanted him to return as a babyface in his feud with The Rock. Hogan made it clear he would only return as Hollywood Hulk Hogan.
“I get a call from Vince. He says, ‘Hey man! I want you to come back and put the red and yellow rub on the rock.’ I said, ‘Well, I don’t want to come back as a good guy. I’m gonna come back as Hollywood Hogan because if I’m gonna do it right. I want to put this kid over right.'”
That match will live on in WWE History due to the electricity and unique atmosphere throughout the match. No matter what, Hogan and The Rock will be hailed as two of the greatest to ever do it.
