GUNTHER is well-known to WWE fans at this point, but there was a time when fans were quite upset about him losing his WALTER moniker. That being said, Elon Musk recently threw down a daring name change of his own, as Twitter is now “X.”
The Twitter bird vanished overnight, and X is now in that spot. Elon Musk said for a while that he was going for that name change and re-branding, but few thought that he was really serious about the whole thing.
Disco Inferno pointed out that fans tend to complain about changes for a short period, but eventually, they adapt and move on, just like the situation with Gunther’s name change in WWE. Similarly, he emphasized that Twitter’s rebranding, replacing the beloved blue bird logo with the letter X, will likely elicit mixed reactions from fans initially, but eventually, it may become a non-issue as well.
The Twitter/X has the same vibe as Walter/Gunther… people immediately complain for the hell of it until a few days later when it’s not a big deal anymore.
We will have to see what’s in the future for X, because that platform has a lot of possibilities, and Elon Musk also has a ton of ideas as well. A name change is never easy, but just like with WALTER to GUNTHER, people will get used to things.
Other name changes in the past were also looked at as absurd from the get-go, including The Giant’s re-branding to The Big Show. Obviously, some name changes aren’t a good idea, but others become huge parts of culture.
