Vince McMahon is known for his interesting takes on pro wrestling booking. For decades, he controlled every moment of WWE television. Now, Triple H is Chief Content Officer, but McMahon is still able to make changes. There have been several instances of Vince McMahon’s creative booking over the years, especially when it comes to James Ellsworth.
Road Dogg recently opened up about Vince McMahon a bit on his Oh You Didn’t Know podcast, and he also revealed one interesting booking idea that The Chairman had. He apparently wanted to give James Ellsworth a lot more shine.
During the podcast, the ex-WWE wrestler discussed James Ellsworth’s memorable WWE journey, which started when he became a fan favorite after a pre-match promo and a squash match loss to Braun Strowman on the July 25th, 2016, edition of Raw. His unexpected popularity led to him signing with the company, and he went on to have a notable feud with AJ Styles.
“And Ellsworth. I’ll tell you whose idea a lot of this stuff was with Ellsworth, and that’s Vince McMahon. Man he saw it, and he was right. When it comes to ratings, which is how you judge if somebody is right or not in the TV business, we did well with Ellsworth. Like it was Ellsworth and AJ, and Ellsworth and Dean Ambrose, what are we doing here? And it was like, ‘No, sir. No, we don’t want to put him in the main event again’, and he’s like, ‘God, you have to’. And he was right. Every week it did better and better, it was like people just had to see what we were going to do here, you know? So yeah, I don’t know. It was a good time.”
James Ellsworth is still doing his thing, working indie wrestling events, and loving every second of it. He is also still riding that wave of fame from WWE. Although time is growing from when Ellsworth was a part of WWE, he will never forget those memories.
Vince McMahon never got James Ellsworth up to the main event level, but he might have tried. Only time will tell when we hear another story of him interjecting his opinion to strap a rocket on an unlikely Superstar.
What’s your take on James Ellsworth’s time in WWE? Do you think he needs another run with the company? Sound off in the comments to let us know what you’re thinking!
