Sgt. Slaughter is a WWE Hall Of Famer and one of the most respected Superstars in the history of the company. While he is respected, there are still quite a few people who don’t think he deserves all the praise. That said, it appears Slaughter took credit for Yokozuna’s character.
Yokozuna will be remembered as one of the most recognizable gimmicks in wrestling history, especially during the early 90s as one of the company’s biggest heels in every way.
Fans fondly remember his iconic feud with Bret Hart and even went on to win two World Titles in his career. He sadly passed away in 2002 and was eventually inducted into the Hall Of Fame in 2012.
While speaking on WrestleBinge, Sgt. Slaughter revealed that he developed a Sumo wrestler-inspired gimmick and took credit for Yokozuna’s entire character in Vince McMahon’s company.
“I created Yokozuna at that time. Rodney was there, and Vince said, ‘I don’t know what to do with this guy.’ I said, ‘He is a hell of a talent; I’ve worked with him many times.’ He said, ‘Yeah, but I’ve got ten Samoans now; I don’t know what to do with him.’ So I started thinking about a Sumo wrestler, and he came through with flying colors. We all stayed there. We fought that war. We won the war.”
This is certainly a big claim made by Sgt. Slaughter and there is no way to tell whether he is actually speaking the truth. Regardless, fans are unlikely to believe what he had to say.
