John Cena was not expected at Money in the Bank, but he showed up anyway. Fans also had no idea that he would call for London to host a WrestleMania event. That being said, the company was well aware of the message, and it was heard loud and clear.
British fans were more than excited when John Cena made a surprise appearance in London, calling for the WWE’s flagship show to come to the UK. The unexpected visit sparked speculation about the possibility of this dream match becoming a reality.
Now, a group of members of Parliament have expressed their interest in supporting this endeavor to bring the WWE to the UK. Alex Davies-Jones, the co-chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Wrestling, acknowledged that John Cena’s appearance took everyone by surprise. While speaking to BBC Newsbeat, Davies-Jones made things quite clear that hope is not lost for London to get a WrestleMania event.
“Nobody predicted John Cena coming out and announcing the possibility of a WrestleMania in the UK.”
“It was utterly incredible and got the whole place buzzing with excitement about the possibilities of what that could mean for wrestling fans, but also for the UK economy and also for future fans as well.”
Alex Davies-Jones went on to say that, “Whatever we can do to make the UK attractive to host wrestling on the world stage we are more than happy to help facilitate. We would use our contact and negotiating skills to try and reach out to WWE, making conversations happen to try and promote the UK as a premier destination for world-class wrestling.”
Speculation is high that there might already be plans to bring WrestleMania to the UK. When questioned about this possibility after the show, Triple H, one of WWE’s top executives, responded with a cryptic statement, saying, “Never say never.”
WWE wants WrestleMania host cities to pay for the event. That bought show aspect might not work with London, because they are already the #1 tourist destination in Europe, so they don’t need to pay WWE for good PR.
Only time will tell what happens in this situation, but London hosting WrestleMania is not a dead idea. That being said, WWE is already looking at WrestleMania 41’s location, and that is very likely to be a U.S. city.
