CM Punk’s run in WWE came to a shocking halt after the Royal Rumble in 2014 when he was frustrated with the company, which led to him walking out. Punk was never a fan of WWE’s lack of creative freedom, but it appears he was allegedly responsible for WWE having more scripted promos in general.
The Second City Saint pushed the envelope in WWE as far as promos and creative freedom were concerned. Fans were drawn to Punk’s anti-authority style of promos and could relate to them.
WWE Hall Of Famer Sgt. Slaughter worked as a producer during his time in WWE as well. He has worked with various talent in his career, including the likes of Hulk Hogan, The Rock, John Cena and CM Punk.
While speaking to Bill Apter on Sportskeed Wrestling’s WrestleBinge, Sgt. Slaughter claimed that he was told Vince McMahon was so furious at CM Punk dropping the f-bomb, that he ended up making promos more scripted in WWE.
“I was told that CM Punk was using the F-bomb on live television, and Vince got a little upset about that, so he just said, ‘That’s it, no more ad-libbing. We’re gonna script everything so I know what people are saying. I’m gonna lose my sponsors and my TV shows if I don’t.’ So the business went a different direction.”
CM Punk is back in the fold as part of AEW Collision and even competed at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door last week. It is highly unlikely he will ever return to WWE and fans are more than okay with that now.
