Fans were eagerly waiting for CM Punk’s return on the debut episode of Collision, as it marked the first time he appeared on AEW television since All Out last year. While his return is already a success, Punk has been getting a lot of mixed reactions from the fans. Now it appears his current run in AEW has been compared to John Cena in a big way.
CM Punk incited the anger of fans and pro wrestlers alike thanks to his rant after AEW All Out last year and the subsequent backstage brawl with The Elite. This truly changed the course of AEW in various ways.
Barring the debut episode of AEW Collision, CM Punk has been on the receiving end of a lot of boos. This even included CM Punk beating Satoshi Kojima in the Owen Hart Cup tournament at the Forbidden Door Event.
While speaking on Busted Open Radio, WWE Hall Of Famer Bully Ray talked about CM Punk’s reaction in AEW after his return. Ray compared him to John Cena, who received similarly divisive reactions from fans.
“I thoroughly enjoyed [Satoshi] Kojima versus Punk and Punk right now is getting the [John] Cena treatment.
Whether they love you or whether they hate you, they have some kind of an emotional response to you,” Bully continued. “Now there’s a two-fold scenario going on with Punk: People who are going to want to see Punk and cheer him; people who are gonna buy tickets to see CM Punk and boo him. What’s the common denominator? Buy tickets.”
With his major win, CM Punk advanced in the Owen Hart Cup tournament. We will have to wait and see whether CM Punk will end up winning the whole tournament.
