Ronda Rousey made her return during the 2022 Royal Rumble event after a nearly three-year absence from WWE. While she won the Smackdown Women’s Championship twice since her return, fans didn’t really care about her either way. Now it appears WWE was criticized for stalling Rousey with her current booking.
Ronda Rousey transitioned from the world of MMA after an underwhelming spell towards the end of her UFC career. She came to WWE with a lot of momentum and fans had huge expectations from her.
However, Ronda Rousey never quite reached the level fans wanted her to. A lot of it can be attributed to WWE not being able to present Rousey as a proper star no matter what.
While speaking on The Wrestling Outlaws, Vince Russo talked about Olympic gold medalist Tamyra Mensah-Stock being tipped to be the ‘female Kurt Angle.’ Russo noted how there is no guarantee a gifted athlete can be a great entertainer. He used Ronda Rousey as an example and then criticized WWE for stalling her with poor booking.
“These are all legit blue-chip athletes. Bro, being an athlete is one thing; being an entertainer is something completely different. I’m going to go back to the ‘it’ factor. Kurt Angle was an entertainer from day one. He had that in him. Bro, if you don’t have that, Ronda Rousey is kind of stalled. That’s kind of a part of it. I think a lot of it with her, you know, it’s the writing and the presentation, and Chris, I’m eager to watch her on RAW because I am a fan of hers and really want to see what they are doing with her.”
Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler won the Unified WWE Women’s Tag Team Titles on Smackdown this week. We will have to wait and see what WWE will have planned for their title run in the coming weeks.
