Tony Khan has a lot of choices to make for AEW, and that includes CM Punk. The Second City Savior is set to compete at Forbidden Door, but there were a few opponents in mind for him.
The Second City Savior will face Satoshi Kojima at Forbidden Door on June 25th. That will be a big match for him, and you never know who will continue in the Owen Hart Foundation Tournament.
Fightful’s paywall reported, “We’re told that there were big AEW programming plans for KENTA to set up the program. Satoshi Kohima, El Phantasmo and Jeff Cobb have all been pitched internally, as well as simply having Punk be a part of the broadcast as an announcer. There were adjustments made to AEW programming this week, as Ibou from WrestlePurists highlighted on Twitter.”
While speaking on a media call, Tony Khan was asked about other opponents that AEW had in mind for CM Punk. He could not comment on anyone that didn’t work out for Punk.
“As for anybody else that was allegedly going to be involved or allegedly rumored, I can’t really comment to that.”
“This is a great hard-hitting match and this is the match I want to see. I thought it was very fitting that one of the most decorate champions in the history of Japan, Satoshi Kojima, who has been the GHC Champion, the IWGP Heavyweight Champion, the Triple Crown Champion.”
“To have one of the most decorated heavyweights ever in Japan come here and wrestle one of the most decorated heavyweights in America, CM Punk, it’s a huge matchup. Kojima, for us, is an amazing get. He was involved in All Out 2021 and had a great match with Jon Moxley. I love working with Kojima and he was somebody I really wanted to bring back for this event. For me, personally, Kojima versus Punk is a match I always wanted to see. They both always wanted to wrestle each other. It’s a great match for us on the card.”
CM Punk is just getting started with his AEW return, and he has a slew of opponents in mind. Only time will tell what is next for him, but it’s also anyone’s guess how long he will keep doing business with the company.
