Billy Gunn has embraced a new persona in AEW that he playfully refers to as “Daddy Ass.” As part of his character, Gunn invites fans to join him in a scissoring gesture, a nod to his edgy past.

In a recent interview with WrestleBinge, Gunn reflected on the contrasting popularity of the scissoring gesture compared to the iconic crotch chop of his DX days.

Gunn acknowledged that he has become a parent’s worst nightmare, transitioning from the notorious crotch chops and provocative catchphrases of the Attitude Era to the current scissoring gesture. He shared an anecdote from a recent signing event, where fans approached him with their children.

The former WWE superstar emphasized that both the crotch chop and the scissoring gesture have their own unique appeal. Gunn recognized the cultural significance of the “Suck It” catchphrase and crotch chop during the Attitude Era, describing it as iconic and unmatched in its popularity. However, he also expressed his surprise at the popularity of the scissoring gesture among fans today.

Gunn recounted instances of fans mimicking the scissoring motion as he walked through airports or public places, illustrating the strong connection they have with his current persona. While acknowledging the differences between the two eras and gestures, Gunn expressed his appreciation for the enthusiasm and support he receives from fans. He emphasized that while they are distinct, both gestures hold a special place in wrestling history and resonate with fans in their own ways.

“Yeah, I think so. They’re both amazing, right? I was just at a signing this weekend, and people would come up to me, and they have their kids, and I’d go, ‘I get it. I’m a parent’s worst nightmare.’ I go from sucking it to scissoring, right? I don’t know how my career has been so not parent-oriented,” he joked. “I don’t know., I think it’s just two different eras and two different things. ‘Suck It’ was with the DX stuff. It was iconic. There’s nothing that’s going to touch that because it was just so special, and it was so good.

“Not saying that this isn’t. This is just something else,” he continued. “It’s just different. The crotch chopping and all that stuff was in that era, which was amazing. Now, everybody is still — I walk through the airport and all I do is scissor. It’s crazy. On the other hand, it’s amazing because you don’t realize until you walk through the airport, or you’re going through Walmart, or somewhere people are, that’s all they want to do. So, on the one hand, it shows you how special it is, and I just think the two were different, but at the same breath, they are the same.”

It is worth noting that Tony Khan has previously encouraged fans to engage in the scissoring gesture as a friendly way to greet each other, reflecting the lighthearted and inclusive atmosphere promoted by the company.
