Sami Zayn Recalls Being Told He Shouldn’t Be In WWE If He Didn’t Want To Be The Next John Cena

Sami Zayn established himself as one of the most beloved Superstars in WWE right now thanks to his willingness to work with anything the company has given him. That being said, Zayn was once told that he shouldn’t even be in WWE if he had no desire to be the next John Cena.

Sami Zayn made his WWE debut in NXT and through his incredible in-ring work and underdog character – eventually became one of the top superstars in NXT. That said, it was a very long and arduous road for him.

While speaking with Corey Graves on WWE After The Bell, Sami Zayn reminisced about his time in NXT and the mentality that was ingrained in him during those formative years in the brand.

Sami Zayn recalled how the mentality of those in NXT was that they should be furious to be in NXT and strive to do better in order to leave the brand. Zayn also recalled being told that he shouldn’t even be in WWE if he had no desire to be the next John Cena.

“I remember when I got to WWE, it was NXT or something like that, it was very much the mentality of, ‘you should be furious that you’re here. You should want to get out of here. You should want to get on the road. Everyone around you is your enemy, they are all vying for your spot. This is a competition. You have to be the best to get out of here. If you don’t want to be the best, you shouldn’t even work here.’ I remember a line something to the extent of, ‘If you don’t want to be the next John Cena, you shouldn’t even be here.’ I remember hearing that and being completely [mouth agape]. ‘What? This is insanity.’ Let’s just say we’re in a room with 100 people, let’s just say the next John Cena is in this room. There’s only one, so the other 99 people in this room should be miserable at all times trying to aspire to be that person? What kind of insanity is that?”

Sami Zayn is now one of the biggest babyfaces in WWE and has been part of the hottest storyline in the company in the last decade or so. We will have to wait and see what’s next in store for Zayn.
