WWE has their eyes on several big names, and Ringside News exclusively reported that they were talking to a half dozen people. Now, we know that they have landed an Olympian in Tamyra Mensah-Stock.
ESPN reports that Tamyra Mensah-Stock, who is an Olympic champion in freestyle wrestling at 68 kilograms, has signed with WWE. Her historic victory at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 made her the first Black woman to win gold in freestyle wrestling. After her win, she expressed interest in joining the company and pursuing a career in pro wrestling.
Mensah-Stock continued her impressive streak by winning her second world title at the 2022 championship in Belgrade, Serbia. Despite her success in amateur wrestling, she has decided to transition to professional wrestling and begin a new chapter in her career.
In a statement to the outlet, the former Olympian and recently signed WWE Superstar had nothing but good things to say about her decision.
“I didn’t want to end my career on that note. So I did another world championships, I wiped the floor with everybody, and I was like, ‘Man, this is not fun anymore. I need a change.’ Something in the back of my head that’s just been itching at me, a dream of mine for I don’t know how long. I just wanted to be in the WWE.”
Tamyra Mensah-Stock appeared with Gable Steveson at SummerSlam in 2021. Steveson signed with WWE, but hasn’t made his in-ring debut just yet. Hopefully, Tamyra Mensah-Stock won’t take as long to arrive on WWE television.
WWE has seen a few people transition from the MMA world and amateur wrestling to see a massive amount of success. Only time will tell what’s in Tamyra Mensah-Stock’s future, but her signing with WWE is certainly being seen as a big deal.
