Adam Cole, who recently returned to AEW, has made headlines after seemingly challenging the current PROGRESS World Champion, Spike Trivet, during his visit to the United Kingdom.
Speaking at The Love of Wrestling Q&A in Manchester, England, Cole expressed his desire to compete for the Progress World Championship and stated that Trivet would not hold the belt for much longer. Daily Star captured the moment when Cole called out Trivet, who subsequently confronted him.
Trivet is one of the top heels in the European independent wrestling scene and was responsible for Jonathan Gresham defeating Cara Noir for the PROGRESS World Title in March 2022, ending Noir’s 791-day reign with the gold. Trivet won the title from Big Damo (formerly WWE’s Killian Dain) in August 2022 at Chapter 139: Warriors Come Out To Play.
In addition to Cole’s challenge to Trivet, FTR teased a confrontation with the Progress Tag Champions, Sunshine Machine. Cash Wheeler hinted that he and his partner would become “very familiar” with them.
These teases suggest a friendly relationship between AEW and top independent promotions. It has been speculated that Cole will challenge for Trivet’s gold at Chapter 155: It’s CLOBBERIN’ time, scheduled to take place on August 26, one night before AEW’s All In event at Wembley Stadium.
Cole returned to the ring on the March 29 edition of Dynamite, defeating Daniel Garcia in his first match since suffering a serious concussion at the June 2022 AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door event.
While Cole may soon have his hands full with Trivet, he recently saw an old friend return to his side in his effort to combat the Jericho Appreciation Society.
